FOUNDERS OF BRAIN FOOD:

Jenny McCourry is a long-time Watauga County Schools teacher, with her BS in K-6 elementary education and a Master's Degree in reading education. She is also National Board Certified in early childhood education. Jenny was recognized as a Teacher of the Year in 2013 at Hardin Park School, and believes in differentiation and teaching to the multiple intelligences because she understands that every child has the ability to learn but not every child learns in the same way.

Amy Forrester is a pre-service educator, finished with all coursework at Appalachian State University and practicing in the field. She is educated in all current Common Core and Essential Standards and employs up-to-date best practices for 21st century skills and education. Amy also maintains a place on the Chancellor’s list for the Reich College of Education. Amy believes in finding a personal connection with students to create motivation.

What will the pre-planned workshops entail?

Each workshop will be directed at a particular grade level. Upcoming workshops will be custom designed based on grade level interest and subject area needs (expressed by parents - please tell us what you would like to see and we will make it happen!). We will communicate with parents and teachers in advance to gain information about interests and educational goals before meeting with students and will modify our lessons accordingly. Whenever possible, integrated curriculum standards will be addressed.

Each workshop will include 20 students (SUMMER ENRICHMENT HAS 9 STUDENTS), and two engaging, exciting and FUN lessons planned specifically for the group’s needs. Brief whole group instruction will be followed by differentiated and guided group instruction, and each lesson will include a wrap-up to ensure comprehension. A 10 minute restroom and snack break will be provided between lessons. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the end of the lesson to participate in a parents’ debriefing session about what the children have learned and some strategies for helping them study at home.

Registration will operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Your child’s attendance will be confirmed by email, and you will receive information about payment in this email. Pre-payment is not refundable, but it is transferrable. If you pay in advance and your child gets sick or for any other reason can not attend the session, you will receive a credit to attend a future applicable session. Should you choose to register your child, but pay on the day of the workshop,  please plan to pay an additional $5 to hold the space. ($30)

Please notify us if you are registered and decide you will be unable to attend so that we can open up that space to another child. We will accept cash or local checks. Upon registration, you will receive an email that includes a brief parent/teacher survey to let us know your child’s interests, levels, and other pertinent information. You are not required to share any personal information about your child, but if you are comfortable giving us some insight, we can more directly meet your child’s specific needs.
